Michelle-beforeMichelle-afterOne day while sitting around at Christmas my sister stated she wanted to go to FAT Camp! “Fitness Camp,” I retorted. She was all about it and researched the Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge. The idea seemed intriguing. Heck, if she was gonna get skinny, then by golly so was I. So I jumped on board. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE!!!! The week at Fitness Ridge was “Magical!” I was nervous, excited and scared of the disappointment – scared that the number on the scale at the end of the week was not going to be the MAGIC number I wanted. I soon realized that the number on the scale was only one part of the bigger picture.

My Sister and I started the week strong. We received our schedules and were determined to do every workout class we could, skipping the lectures. After all, we were armed with all the diet and nutrition information we needed. We were experienced, so we thought. All we needed was for someone to kick us in the butt and get us motivated! So at the end of grueling day one, we decided we needed a little break so we opted for stretch class and lecture – Best move EVER!!! We were soaking it all up!! We learned to eat a protein with a carbohydrate. We learned butter and oil (in moderation) are okay and that food-like substances like artificial sweeteners are not okay.

Whoa…put on the breaks! All I had been taught was wrong! It all began to make sense! My dieting wasn’t successful. First of all, it was dieting. I was eating the wrong things and I was passing the wrong information down to my family. It was right then and there that I had my epiphany. It’s all about the journey, not the number on the scale. It’s all about portions of food on your plate and what goes in the food that will help your body burn it properly as fuel. 

Before going to Fitness Ridge, I guess I really never challenged myself in regard to exercise. I had lost weight in the past. The number on the scale was okay, so I must be okay. Well those other numbers, the ones for cholesterol (HDL and LDL) and triglycerides had crept back up. I was maintaining my weight before going to Fitness Ridge but why did I still have a low HDL? One word, EXERCISE!! Exercising was my most favorite aspect of the program, to my surprise I might add. I love it now! After leaving Fitness Ridge, I have continued exercising five times a week. I never knew I had it in me. I loved the variety of classes we were offered! I can’t believe I am saying this but “treading” was my favorite class!

At The Biggest Loser Resort they tell you, “it’s not all about the number on the scale, it is way bigger than that.” I can finally say I agree. Upon arriving home from the resort I had a lipid panel done for a checkup. And all my numbers are now in check. My total cholesterol lowered by 70 points! My triglycerides for the first time in my life are in normal range and my LDL and HDL are in sync! Amazing!

I am so excited to continue on. I know I will eventually love the number on the scale but I won’t focus on this possible ending on my weight-loss journey. Heck, I don’t want my journey to end! It’s all about the means now. It’s all about how you get there!
